Painter Douglas Max Utter is one of the area’s best-known and most respected artists. He’s been producing work for more than 50 years and shows no signs of slowing down, producing new work constantly while also revisiting and re-showing older work, giving viewer the chance to see how his ideas have developed.
He’s on the roster of HEDGE Gallery where he’s had several previous shows. Currently it’s hosting a new one called Family Life and Other Fancies (Paintings Then and Now. It features recent paintings and drawings paired with older work, some dating as far back as 1980.
“My son Christopher was born in 1984, followed soon by my daughter Elizabeth in 1985,” he says. “It was a very busy time, full of change and pain as well as joy. Some of the most remarkable transformations in my work developed quickly during that period, as I began to experiment with commercial and industrial materials (especially latex-based house paints and spray paint) in much larger formats than before.”
The show will be on view through Friday September 1. This week on Wednesday August 9, Doug will be in the gallery talking about his work and answering questions. It’s free and open to all.
