Bang Your Head

We’re strutting pretty tall these days, regardless of the vagaries of sport. We’re so proud, there’s danger of swaggering and slamming our swollen heads against an overpass.

To keep us grounded, we suggest trying on some the music, theater, community and small biz activities we’ve lined up for your perusal. Make Music Cleveland is spreading the good sounds all around town. ChamberFest collaborates with Kasumi, Ohio Light Opera revives the classics, and Joe Lovano and Anne E. DeChant both return home.

This week, expand your mind and learn about beekeeping, build the best sandcastle, celebrate clean, renewable energy, turn your talent into a viable business, support marriage equality, and discuss the Global Peace Index. We’re mounting our acclaimed David Bowie show at the BOP STOP, this time with a Cleveland connection, in case you got sold out last time. That should be enough to wrap your head around. –Thomas Mulready

Warm weather means that the ensemble comprising the Wooster-based Ohio Light Opera has loosened up its vocal chords and is getting ready to present another season of musical theater drenched in nostalgia. Some go back nearly 140 years while others are “contemporary” – like, 1957. Some you may have seen a zillion times – Gilbert & Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore, for instance, while the 1912 The Lady of the Slipper hasn’t been fully staged in more than a century.

Kelly Ferjutz gives us the lowdown on the upcoming season’s seven musicals that this professional repertory company with be performing at the College of Wooster in the next two months. Sat 6/17-Sat 8/12.

Heavy metal is one of the most male-dominated of music genres, its audiences a sea of dudes in leather jackets and black concert tees. Surprisingly, they’ve always been open to seeing women thrashing up on the stage. so perhaps it’s not so strange that five young women from California formed an Iron Maiden tribute band, cheekily dubbed the Iron Maidens.

CoolCleveland’s John Benson chats with drummer Linda “Nikki McBURRain” McDonald about their passion for one of the ultimate 80s metal bands, and what the members of that band thought when they heard these ladies playing songs even the original band doesn’t tackle live from their own repertoire.
