The City Club convenes a forum on internal attacks on democracy. Poetry Magick Workshoppe focuses on forgiveness. The Maltz Museum kicks off its Chagall for Children exhibit.But we’re only going to move forward if we work at it. Now is the time to stand up for women’s personhood. Women and their allies will gather at the Free Stamp this Sat 05/14 at 11AM. And CoolCleveland columnist C. Ellen Connally is aghast at the cultural illiteracy of people who have somehow managed to avoid reading To Kill A Mockingbird or understand the message of the story. Until we address that, it’s going to be hard to move ahead.
When the draft of Samuel Alito’s opinion in the pending Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was leaked late on Monday May 2, it was a like an earthquake shook the U.S. It gave the stamp of approval to the radical abortion bans sweeping the country in GOP-controlled states such as Ohio.
The consequences of these bans would be seismic, reducing women to non-persons whose bodies, lives & futures are wholly controlled by the government, as well as causing massive economic shockwaves. The Rock Hall announced its usual motley class of 7 bands/artists in the performers category, including Clevelander Neil Giraldo & Pat Benatar in the photo above by Anastasia Pantsios. And they demonstrated once again why its new “musical excellence” category is confused and meaningless. Read more
With warm weather on the horizon, Cleveland Metroparks starts reopening its cafes, restaurants and other amenities this week. Additional concessions, such as watercraft rentals, will open Memorial Day weekend. Read more
The Urban Bright Exhibition showcases the artwork that Cleveland students have accomplished during Art House, Inc.’s Urban Bright Arts-in-Education programs.
The exhibit is located at Art House, Inc., 3119 Dennison Avenue, M-F from 10AM – 4PM. The exhibit is now open by appointment. Read more.
Well, CoolClevelanders: if you were out and about this past weekend, I’m sure you were in for a treat. I was personally able to attend several amazing events this past weekend.
Friday night 05.06 started with Gumbo, a monthly gathering that features a brass band to accompany the DJ’s musical selection. This month’s Gumbo was a part of the New Black Vanguard exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
On Saturday 05.07, the opening of Generations: Art by Artists and Their Families at Deep Roots Experience was a beautiful showcase. The space was filled with interactive art activities for and by families (see image above). Also on Saturday: the stunning performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by the Cleveland Ballet was a heartfelt triumph. Read more from CoolCleveland correspondent Maya Kincaidhere.
Nina’s problem now is her brand. She has created an image of herself that is not likeable. Her flashy clothes, frequent changes of hairstyle and Baptist minister cadence to her speech don’t convey a sense of stability to voters — especially among older Black voters who are more likely to go to the polls.
