Interactive Art Show Engages Visitors at Understory Gallery

Interactive Art Show Engages Visitors at Understory Gallery

Stephen Calhoun

Wed 8/13 @ 5-8PM

A new exhibit called Terms of Engagement will be opening at 78th Street Studios’ Understory gallery this week. The group show, curated by local artists Stephen Calhoun and Susan Snipes, features work by eight artists (including the curators) whose work, they explain, “explore[s] how we connect across bodies, ideas, systems, and spaces. Participation, presence, and reflection are at the heart of this show, offering visitors multiple entry points to consider their role in shaping art’s meaning.”

The multidisciplinary work in the show asks visitors to the gallery to no just look at work on display but also to engage with it in some way, to respond and make choices. The work by Calhoun, Snipes, Ross Bochnek, r ferris, Carol Langley, Linda Post, Rex Young and Marian Lyndgaard includes a questionnaire that invites visitors to leave a visual mark, a fabric screen that creates visuals via viewer gestures, a conversation with artificial intelligence, an interactive video and an installation of disco balls and pendulums visitors are invited to manipulate to create different effects, among other displays.

The show is in keeping with Understory’s mission of presenting experiment and conceptual art. It will be on view through September 27.
