Morticia’s Chair have been kicking around the local scene under most people’s radar since the mid ’90. The band, who’ve been described as folk-goth to try to capture their aura of beautiful gloom coupled with earthiness and a streak of delicacy, revolves around singer/guitarist Mark Kae, who made his mark in the early ’90s with Screwtractor. His portentous baritone and lyrical sense that’s both morbid and witty give the band a distinctive flair; bassist Frank Prpic and drummer Michael J provide the backup troops.
You may not know them, but they’ve just released their fifth album Living a Dream, drawing on their talented friends here and there to flesh out their three-piece sound. Its tracks range from the whimsical yet somber “Bugs” to the sprawling, grandiose jam of Sabbat” to the raging “Love The Woman,” which reworks an old Screwtractor song that’s a pointed critique of anti-choice zealots written in the heat of the ’90s abortion clinic demonstrations. Too bad it’s become timely again.
Morticia’s Chair has been getting out and about a lot more in the last couple of years and hopefully, with the new disc out, that will continue. They’re playing at the Grog Shop with two other local acts, the Pistolettes and prog rockers Flannel Response.
Admission is $5.
