One of the great things about the School of Rock is how it encourages musical beginners to jump right in and start playing with their peers. It’s something girls in particular can be reluctant to try, and even after all these years, rock and roll is overwhelmingly male — although much, much less than it used to be. Each decade since rock’s conception in the ’50s has brought more and more women into the music scene
So it’s encouraging to see a talented lineup of area women musicians playing at the Grog Shop at a “Ladies Night” benefit for the School of Rock. They include Leah Lou of the quirky duo Leah Lou & the Two Left Shoes, singer/songwriters Taylor Lamborn and Gretchen Pleuss (pictured), the classically trained Nicole Thomas, DJs Candi Fresca and Brittany Benton, and soul singer LaShelle.
The show is free, with a suggested donation of $10.
