Light

They say it’s darkest before the dawn, and in this region, we certainly know just how dark it can get. But it’s getting brighter.

Let’s hope the sun shines on the CiCLEVia “open streets” event, while CPT ignites the stage lights on their new season, and The Maltz launches This Light of Ours, featuring activist photographers of the civil rights movement. LeBron lights up social media with his endorsement of Hillary, and we couldn’t agree more. We’re moving into the light. –Thomas Mulready

Are you registered to vote? Election Day is Tuesday November 8, and to vote in Ohio, you must register by Tuesday October 11. Contact your board of elections NOW to register, check to make sure your address is up to date and, if you haven’t voted recently, that you are still registered.

He’s thinking about the future of the kids his LeBron James Family Foundation works to provide with opportunities and which candidate would boost their options more.

“Only one person running truly understands the struggles of an Akron child born into poverty,” he writes. “And when I think about the kinds of policies and ideas the kids in my foundation need from our government, the choice is clear. That candidate is Hillary Clinton.”

If you step back and look at this year’s two major-party candidates for president, stripped of all the attacks and smears and phony “scandals” and media hoopla, the contrast is striking.

You have one knowledgable, seasoned candidate brimming with specific ideas for making Americans’ lives better. And you have a charlatan offering the false promise that your life would be better if only you were allowed to oppress someone else.

SPONSORED: With the elections coming, voters want transparency from their candidates. Cleveland Public Library has teamed up with CreativeMornings, a lecture series for the creative community, to invite Judge Michael Ryan to Main Library for a discussion on government transparency. This event is FREE with registration on Fri 10/14 from 8:30 – 10:00AM. CPL.org.

Husband-and-wife artists Gary and Laura Dumm usually work on their own (often with some feline help!) But they’ve combined their talents for the show Here There Be Monsters, using colorful, cartoonish graphic techniques to tackle ideas about the despoiling of the environment.

They tell us why working together on the project was a “win-win” and how they hope the show, opening this week at BAYarts, will impact viewers. Coincidentally, this photo was used as Vanity Crash’s latest album cover. Fri 10/7-Tue 10/25.

Before social media, the only way most people heard about the civil rights struggle was through the hard work of writers and photographers “embedded” into the movement, on the scene in the American South, bringing back scenes of racial division, homegrown terror, Ku Klux Klan attacks, and the heroic efforts of those working on the right side of history.

Listen as CoolCleveland speaks with Les Kelen, executive director of the Center for Documentary Expression & Art, and organizer of This Light of Ours: Activist Photographers of the Civil Rights Movement, on display now at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage through 05/14/17.

Wondering how to get the whole community involved in recycling the right way?

Follow Fairview Park Mayor Eileen Patton at their Recycle Roundup and Shredding Day at City Hall as she outlines which items can be recycled on the curb (bottles, cans, paper), which ones should be saved up and brought to recycle events such as this (oil paints, hazardous waste, gasoline, electronics), and which ones can be recycled elsewhere (tires, which can be recycled at your tire shop).

Boxing promoter Don King was once a superstar and celebrity in his own right, managing top fighters and staging megawatt events.

Now, says CoolCleveland commentator C. Ellen Connally, he’s been reduced to the equivalent of a punch-drunk fighter, struggling for one more moment in the spotlight as he grovels and caters to a clownish presidential candidate, making himself appear to be just as buffoonish.
