As Cleveland’s BlueWater Chamber Orchestra, founded nine years ago by Carlton Woods, who died in 2017, wraps up its 2018-2019 season, it makes a big announcement: conductor Daniel Meyer has been named as the group’s permanent artistic director and conductor.
Meyer has led programs during the last few years as guest conductor, demonstrating his rapport with the musicians and his appeal to BlueWater audiences. Meyer, a Cleveland native, has guested with orchestras across the U.S. and in Germany, and has conducted the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center. But he’s most familiar in Western Pennsylvania where he is music director of the Erie Philharmonic and the Lakeside Symphony Orchestra, artistic director of the Westmoreland Symphony, and Director of Orchestral Activities at Duquesne University, and frequently been on the podium at the Pittsburgh Symphony.
“Daniel is the creative leader we’ve been looking for,” said BlueWater concertmaster Ken Johnston in the announcement press release. “After the death of our founder Carlton Woods, we’ve been on a journey to begin a new chapter and honor his legacy. Daniel is the perfect maestro to help us do that.”
Meyer will be making his debut as the group’s official leader this weekend in a program titled “Classic Tales Retold in Music” at Plymouth Church UCC in Shaker Heights. The program includes contemporary composer John Corigliano’s “Elegy,” David Diamond’s Music from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Edward Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, and Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose complete ballet suite.
Tickets are $23, $18 for seniors, $9 for students.
