Food For Life

Every week, we offer food for thought. And we always have plenty of that. Don’t take it for granted. But this time of year, our community is eager to feed itself in more ways than one.

Mythology of Illusion is the theme for this year’s Parade The Circle, celebrating 30 years, and everyone’s an artist, according to conceptualist Robin VanLear. Ohio Light Opera kicks off their 40th season with South Pacific and runs for 8 weeks, and we’ve got a preview. Taste of Lakewood takes over Madison Park to showcase one of the area’s foodiest communities.

If you have a garden, you know everything starts somewhere. Akron Pride is only feasible because of the dollars they raise with this week’s drag battle at the Akron Civic. An art auction at Good Goat Gallery benefits Burning River Roller Derby. Political change starts somewhere, and the next generation of politicians, represented by 19-year-old Anton Krieger, is knocking on the door; see our profile by CoolCleveland writer Jenna Thomas, a contemporary of Krieger’s.

Our popular Summer Farmers Market directory has just been updated, and Kent celebrates their cuisine scene with Kent Restaurant Week. Hale Farm & Village offers their Sow & Grow Farm Fest, and Cookies for Kids are on sale today at 11 area restaurants, with proceeds going to area food banks to feed kids this summer. Turns out, hunger exists everywhere. –Thomas Mulready

On this episode, we’re talking to Mary Verdi-Fletcher, founder of Dancing Wheels – one of the premier arts and disabilities organizations in the United States based in Cleveland. Dancing Wheels’ mission is to educate, advocate and entertain through compelling, innovative dance. Its 38th annual gala and performance with theme, Reverse* Reboot* Reveal!, is happening Fri 6/14 at Playhouse Square’s Allen Theatre.

And we have brand new music from Cleveland’s Orange Animal and a track from Akron’s Davey Squires.

One of Cleveland’s most distinctive events is the annual Parade the Circle, the result of months of creative work by artists and amateurs alike, leading up to the big community procession around Wade Oval. For its 30th year, the theme is “Mythology of Illusion” and a big tent pitched across from the sponsoring Cleveland Museum of Art has been buzzing with people putting together those illusions.

But where did this whole idea originate? Our writer John Benson catches up with its conceptualist, organizer and head worker bee Robin VanLear to find out. Sat 6/8.

Also, check out our photos of the activity in the PTC workshop tent where the costumes, masks and props are being put together, offering tantalizing hints of what the final result will look like.

SPONSORED: You and your favorite rising high school senior can enjoy a laid-back college visit to Baldwin Wallace University at a summer cookout on Thu 7/11 or Thu 8/1. Now in its 40th year, Ohio Light Opera, based at the College of Wooster, has announced an exciting season of musical theater and operetta. As usual, it mixes seldom-performed works with familiar, beloved ones such as the 1949 musical South Pacific, with music by the legendary team of Rodgers & Hammerstein (pictured), which kicks off the season on Sat 6/15.

Six additional shows run in repertory through Sat 8/10, with Girl Crazy, featuring music by the Gershwins and Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods opening in June and running through the final week. The obligatory Gilbert & Sullivan, this year Pirates of Penzance, opens Wed 7/3, with a handful of more obscure musicals added to the schedule in July. We preview the first half of the season.

Young people don’t vote in the numbers they should. The result is that officeholders tend to be older and look after the interests of older people. A young man in North Royalton wants to change that. Only 19, Anton Krieger is running for city council there, dipping his hands into politics at the most local level.

He tells other young people who might feel disengaged and/or underprepared: “Have the confidence in yourself, confidence that you know your community. Be willing to go out and knock doors, talk to people, and use that energy and dedication to your advantage.” Our writer Jenna Thomas, who’s about Krieger’s age herself, tells us more about him and his upcoming fundraiser.

One of the most popular events at the International Women’s Air & Space Museum is its Rocket Day. It joins with the Great Lakes Science Center and NASA’s Glenn Research Center to initiate kids into the mysteries of rockets. They’ll learn the history of rockets, see rockets launched and get to set off their own film canister rockets if weather permits. But hurry and register – the event sells out! Wed 6/12.

For the most part, all developers are interested in is one thing: profit. Neighborhood integrity and preservation is for residents to protect, that is, if they have the wherewithal to do so – which is rarely the case. Usually, neighborhood groups simply don’t have the sophistication, organizational structure or financial clout to go up against wealthy developers….
