Fri 5/31 & Sat 6/1 @ 11AM-5PM
Poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892) was known as a full-throated celebrant of the young, pioneering nation that was the United States in the 19th century and its avid, lustful, enthusiastic citizens. He was also known as one of the progenitors of free verse. He’s best known for his epic Leaves of Grass, which he self-published in 1855 and continued to revise throughout his life. The first edition included such well-known works as “Song of Myself” and “I Sing the Body electric.” A later version included the famous elegy for President Lincoln, “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d.”
Loganberry Books is celebrating the bicentennial of his birth (May 31, 1819) with a reading of Leaves of Grass, starting at around 11am on Fri 5/31 and continuing starting at 11am Saturday until 5pm or whenever there’s nothing more to read. All are welcome to come and read as much as they would like, in sequence from beginning to end.
The reading will take place in the courtyard next to the store, weather permitting, and there will be refreshments. Of course, Loganberry will have its extensive collection of Whitman’s work on display and available for sale. The event is free and open to all.
