In recent years, the town of Painesville in Lake County has increasingly become a destination for Mexican immigrants. With almost a quarter of its residents now Hispanic, it’s led to changes (mostly positive) in the local climate, ranging from more (highly touted) Mexican restaurants to more Spanish heard at Mentor Headlands to an increase in the town’s population after a couple of decades of shrinkage.
Unfortunately, that population has made it a target for ICE (U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement), an organization increasingly reviled by a wide spectrum of the population for its seizure of people without cause or warrants in violation of the U.S. Constitution. And the Lake County Sheriff’s Office is one of four counties cooperating with it, also an unpopular move, particularly after the U.S. Supreme Court’s approval of detaining people based on the way they look.
That unpopularity is fueling the Lake Geauga Fights Back Network’s “No ICE in Lake County” rally taking place at 104 East Erie Street (the Sheriff’s office) in downtown Painesville on Monday October 20.
