Saxophonist/composer/educator Chris Coles is one of northeast Ohio’s many prominent jazz musicians. Born and raised in Cleveland and currently based in Akron where he is an Assistant Professor of Practice in Jazz Studies at the University of Akron, like most area jazz musicians he’s performed with a variety of ensembles, among them, Bluelight, the Admirables, Black Dog Octet, Red Rhinoceros Revival Octet, the Sam Blakeslee Large Group and The Stokes Legacy Jazz Orchestra. He also won the 2017 Knight Foundation Arts Challenge for his 40-minute composition “Nine Lives,” written to honor the memory of the nine people killed at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015.
He also leads his own quartet called Gleam which released its debut album in 2018. Now the Gleam project is back with a new album titled Love Deamon Song Cycle. When he debuts it at the BOP STOP, he’ll have way more than a quartet: seven other top area jazz musicians will join him, including Steve Kortyka on sax, Theron Brown and Cliff Barnes on keyboards, Zack Jones on guitar, Heron Ko on bass, Zaire Daren on drums and Patrick Duke Graney on percussion. Akron hip hop artist Floco Torres will be emceeing.
This event will also be livestreamed on BOP STOP’s Youtube Channel. Go HERE to get tickets.
