New Zealand native Annea Lockwood is one of the pioneers of modern experimental, improvisational music, beginning her exploration of a wide range of environmental and bodily sounds and working them into music and sonic installations back in the 1960s. She’s particularly drawn to sounds of water and aquatic environments. Recently, she’s been working on sound maps of rivers, some in collaboration with other artists.
This legend of boundary-breaking sound art, the predecessor of the experimental acts that Cleveland Uncommon Sound Project (CUSP) exists to book, will be CUSP’s next headliner. She will be performing some of her acoustic and electroacoustic works, accompanied on two works — her 1974 “Spirit Catchers” and 2016 “bayou-born for Pauline” — by a group of noted local artists who work in the experimental music field, most of them familiar names in this area: Kristen Ban Drake, Naomi Columna, bbob drake, Melanie Emig, Rob Galo, Ben Gmetro, Grace Harper, Leia Hohenfeld, and Amelia Korbitz. The performances include spoken word and movements. She’ll also perform five other pieces conceived between 2012 and 2023.
It takes place at the former Convivium 33 at 1433 E. 33rd Street in AsiaTown. Entrance is a suggested donation of $15-$20 at the door.
