Seventy-seven-year-old American pianist Garrick Ohlsson had had a stellar career since winning the International Chopin Paino Competition in Poland at the age of 22. It was only the first of many honors he won. Over the years, he’s performed with countless orchestras and chamber music ensembles, and assembled a huge repertoire which includes about 80 concertos. Appropriately, he’s known as a special advocate for the music of Frédéric Chopin but he’s also known for his performances of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

When Ohlsson returns to Severance Music Center to perform with the Cleveland Orchestra, he’ll be performing one of those 80 — Mozart’s 1784 Piano Concerto No. 23. It’s part of a program that also features Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 3 (“Rhenish”) and Permissions by 33-year-old Tyler Taylor who was appointed the Orchestra’s latest Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow this past spring.
