Thu 5/15-Sun 5/18
This is the big weekend — plant sales everywhere! And with the weather warming, it’s time to get them in the ground.
Among the organizations holding their annual plant and garden sales this weekend are Holden Arboretum in Kirtland; Rockefeller Greenhouse right of the Shoreway on MLK Blvd; and the Summit Metro Parks at Monroe Falls Metro Park in Akron.
Holden’s plant sale extends over two days —from noon-4pm Saturday and 10am-4pm Sunday. They’ll be offering more than 80 types of native wildflowers, ornamental perennials, shrubs, and trees, including such selections from their own collections as rhododendrons, spicebush, milkweed, skullcap, wild senna, wild columbine and toad lily. There’ll also be vendors offering things for your garden including décor, botanical art, and pottery. The sale is included with regular admission.
Rockefeller Greenhouse is open 7 days a week from 10am-4pm and it’s always free – if you haven’t been there, you should go. Its annual three-day plant sale, May 15-17, is the perfect time. It features vendors from a variety of business and garden clubs, and upcycled art by area artists. It offers annual and perennial, vegetable starters and herbs, house plants and tropicals, and best of all, irises from its Willott Iris Garden which is at peak bloom this time of year.
Summit Metro Parks is holding its 4th annual Native Plant Festival Saturday May 17 @ 10am-4pm, with local plant nurseries, landscapers and park staff offering information and advice in educational sessions, and a wide variety of plants available to purchase. There’ll also be live music by Jen Maurer & Bill Lestock (10am-12:30pm) and Hot Djang (12:45-3:15pm) with food available for purchase.
