Work of Two Area Assemblage Artists Is Up Next at AAWR

Thu 5/19 @ 5:30-8PM

Artists Archives of the Western Reserve’s next show features a pair of artists who started from a similar place — both graduates of Kent State University with degrees in art, both sculptures — but used their practices in very different ways.

The Life of Objects: Roy Bigler & Terry Durst showcases two artists, whose sculpture assemblage-based is fabricated from found objects that reflect an interest in repurposing the past, both their own and their culture’s, juxtaposing a cacophony of ideas they suggest.

Roy Bigler (1955-2014) was influenced by the Fluxus, Dada and mail art movements, and the latter provided many of the small items he’d use in his tightly bordered sculptures, stuffed with these bits of ephemera. Durst, on the other hand, doesn’t try to contain his materials; he lets them loose to tell their stories, often on a large scale. He says, “I feel that my job as an artist is to investigate myself, those parts of me that I would otherwise never access. Of course, I hope through this investigation something universal will emerge.”

The show opens with a reception on Thursday May 19 and will be open through June 25. Masks are required.
