Chinese music has deep roots that make western classical music seem as contemporary as Justin Bieber. One of its oldest instruments, the mouth-blown reed instrument called the sheng goes back more than 3,000 years. Traditionally used primary as accompaniment to performances of various types, it’s evolved in modern times as a solo instrument.
One of the musicians taking in that direction is Wu Wei who studied in Shanghai an plaed with the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra before studying in Berlin where he now lives. From there he’s won a series of international competitions for traditional Chinese music, and toured as a soloist with ensembles and orchestras around the world, world premiering more than 150 pieces, including 10 concertos for sheng and orchestra. (He himself composes music for his instrument.
