Many of the legendary rock guitarists came out of bands. But there’s a group of guitar gods who made their reputations primarily standing on their own: people like northeast Ohio’s Neil Zaza, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, musicians who have offered young players roadmaps for what can be achieved on the instrument.

For those who want to know more about what it takes for a guitarist to reach that status, Vai will be the guest of Rock Hall’s Senior Director of Museum & Archival Collections Andy Leach who will interview him for an exclusive live stream. They’ll talk about his long and storied career, what he’s working on now and his legacy, celebrated in the current Rock Hall exhibit Play It Loud: Instruments of Rock & Roll on view through the end of the year. It features Vai’s “Bones” custom Stratocaster-type guitar, which he designed to enhance his distinctive style of playing.

Vai’s reputation began to grow with an early 80s stint with Frank Zappa’s band and by 1983, was basically a solo artist, doing short stints, tours and recording sessions with many acts. But it’s his own name that’s carried his career. In the interview, he’ll undoubtedly share how much hard work went into that! Learn more about Vai here.
