More than 25 years ago, a group of Cleveland musicians in some of the area’s best heavy metal bands decided to do a side project that incorporated some of the interesting new heavy sounds coming out, especially from the industrial and electronic scenes that were adventurous and experimental. They donned masks so that this side project didn’t draw attention from their “real” bands.
Who were those “real” bands again? Mushroomhead has now released seven albums, crisscrossed the country numerous times, toured European and, of course, been through numerous members as the long-distance haul always claims victims. The band is still anchored by drummer Steve Felton (aka “Skinny” — the band adopts pseudonyms to go with the masks). Other longtime members include keyboard player/programmer Rick “St1tch” Thomas and vocalist Jason “J Mann” Popson, an original member who’s come and gone several times.
With their masks, costumes, intricate sets and music that can be harsh and even gothic, they’re the perfect Halloween band. It’s rare when they don’t have a Halloween season show in their hometown, and they’ve got one this year at the Agora.
Tickets are $30-$60.
