Join a Local Beach Cleanup on International Coastal Cleanup Day

Sat 9/21 @ 9AM

Throughout the warm weather, Adopt-a-Beach beach cleanups take place around all five great lakes, sponsored by the Chicago-based Alliance for the Great Lakes. Each year, about 15,000 people descend on beaches to pick up tens of thousands of pounds of litter, nearly 90% of it plastic, that people should know better than to drop and provide data to researchers studying what’s getting into our water worldwide.

The end-of-summer September beach cleanup is the biggest one, as Adopt-a-Beach hooks up with other environmental groups around the world for International Coastal Cleanup.

Want to be a cog in this giant wheel of helping to clean up the Earth? Go to the Adopt-a-Beach website and find the one nearest you. Here in northeast Ohio, you can go out to the beautiful, sprawling Mentor Headlands beach where the Cleveland Chapter of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Meijer Grocery Stores will be hosting a cleanup from 10am-1pm. If you’re on the west side, head over to Bay Village’s Huntington Beach. Volunteers will start work there at 9am; meet at the Hut.

Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes. Trash bags and gloves will be provided, but if you want to bring your own, that’s helpful. All ages are welcome.
