Drummer Bernie Dresel is too young (57) to remember the Big Band Era, but he’s got a serious love for it anyway. The Eastman School of Music alum drummed for he Brian Setzer Orchestra from 1992-2006 while also playing with Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band from its inception in 1999 through 2014. His own jazz orchestra, the BBB was founded in 2014 and is based in Los Angeles where he lives. It features 16 L.A. studio pros who swing hard on tunes from the classic big bands of Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Count Basie, Woody Herman and Duke Ellington, as well Earthm Wind and Fire and Tower of Power.
Dresel will be lending his swinging beats to the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra’s next program “Bern, Bern, Bern!” and will feature music from his recordings. They’ll perform at Akron’s Blu Jazz + on Fri 5/17. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.
