Seattle-based jazz trumpeter Kamal Abdul Alim won’t be a stranger when he brings his band the Real Thing to Nighttown. The composer/musician got his early musical experience at the Music Settlement and in the Cleveland public schools before heading to Boston to attend the world-famous Berklee College of Music in the mid ’60s, completing his degree at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. There he immersed himself in the African and African-American music that influences him to this day, studying with greats like Max Roach and Archie Shepp.
Since then he’s lived in New York, Paris, African and now Seattle, picking up new influences along the way that feed his strong, uplifting sounds. He’ll perform in Cleveland with a trio that also includes vibes player Cecil Rucker, pianist Skip Gibson, acoustic bass player Kevin Muhammed and drummer Larry Hancock.
Tickets are $10.
