Janis Siegel has been earning a living from her agile, spirited vocals for four decades. She became part of the most successful lineup of the vocalese quartet Manhattan Transfer in 1973 (she’s still part of it). With them, she’s recorded over two dozen albums and won 10 Grammys.
But that’s not all she’s done. She’s been part of a couple of other vocal side projects, Sing Sing Sing with Jon Hendricks, Dianne Reeves and Bobby McFerrin, and McFerrin’s Voicestra.
And she’s released 10 solo albums, including last year’s Nightsongs: A Late Night Interlude. On it, she glides through a dozen tunes, many brushed with a sultry Latin vibe that suits her richly toned alto. (Among the cast of stellar jazz players backing her is young Cleveland native, trumpeter Dominick Farinacci).
Fans of vocal jazz will want to catch her at Nighttown, where she’ll be backed by pianist John DiMartino-piano and acoustic bassist Boris Kozlov.
Tickets are $25.
Earlier that day, Siegel will conduct a master class at Tri-C Metro’s Mainstage Theatre. She’ll talk with legendary producer (and native Clevelander) Tommy PiPuma about songs and singing. Students from the Cleveland Metropolitan School District will perform. The event is free and open to the public. Call 216-987-4444 for more information.
