Bill Callahan’s music, both under his own name and the band name Smog, grazed the edges of the ’90s “post rock” movement, sharing its propensity for open-ended, seemingly random compositions that focus on instrumentals more than vocals. It’s gradually become more focused on his flat, unemotional voice delivering emotionally complex lyrics in simple musical contexts.
Callahan’s spent his entire 23-year career recording or Chicago–based indie Drag City, which boasts a lengthy roster of experimental and offbeat artists, including Will Oldham, whose understated, grainy, country/folk-inflected work has similarities with Callahan’s.
Callahan will be at the Beachland Ballroom with Lonnie Holley, a 63-year-old African-American outsider artist from Alabama who released his first album, Just Before Music, last year. His music is feels spontaneous and unschooled — true “folk” music. It’s the musical equivalent of outsider art.
Tickets are $15 in advance, $17 at the door.
