Hotz’s Cafe

You don’t go to Hotz’s because it’s chic or hip. You go to bask in echoes of the Tremont of 100 years ago, when virtually every block was its own little city, with its own shops, church, a bar/café, and ethnicity. Hotz’s was opened in 1919 by a Rusyn immigrant as a gathering place for his fellow Rusyns in Cleveland. It’s now run by the founder’s grandson, who welcomes all ethnicities in today’s mixed-bag Tremont. It’s still got the original bar, 24-foot shuffleboard game, and other remnants of that more insular era but now anyone can grab a bar stool, a an inexpensive cold beer, and some plain hearty tavern grub, including pizza from another family business next door, Big Guy Pizza.
