After the Coventry Elementary School in Cleveland Heights Coventry Village more than a decade ago and sat empty for a few years, arts groups and nonprofit organizations started to move in. It became the home of groups such as Ensemble Theatre and Lake Erie Ink, which hosts writing workshops, a use many saw as a perfect fit for the artsy neighborhood. It stood next door to the Coventry branch of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights public library and the P.E.A.C.E. Park created by community members on the former school’s playground.

So when the city, which owned the property, announced it was accepting proposals from developers — which could have included stuffing it with more of those lego-like townhouses you see everywhere — the tenants sprang into action — and won. The city agreed earlier this year to transfer ownership to the library, which is committed to the P.E.A.C.E. arts campus concept.

It also allowed the tenants to begin fundraising in earnest. Come visit and attend a fundraiser there this weekend. The benefit is an evening of music featuring three performers: New England native and well-traveled Americana/folk artist and yoga instructor Caroline Cotter; classically trained New York singer-songwriter Emily Mure; and local duo Bridgetown Junction, featuring seasoned musicians Amanda Walsh and Rick Szekelyi who came together in 2015 and released an album called Troubadour last year.

Tickets are $25. Get them here. Money raised will help improve building accessibility and address costs of tenants taking over operations.
