The @WesterliesMusic Take an Unusual Approach to Jazz @BopStopTMS

Westerlies

Mon 3/2 @ 7PM

The Westerlies are four very young jazz musicians — all just graduated or about to graduate from Juilliard or the Manhattan School of Music. While based in New York, the quartet are originally from Seattle, where they were mentored by avant-garde/experimentalist jazz pianist/composer Wayne Horvitz.

So, although they formed to present their own music, for their first full recording, the group, which features Riley Milberkar and Zubin Hensler on trumpets and Andy Clausen and Willem de Koch on trombones, pay tribute to their mentor. Won’t The Children Come On Home: The Music of Wayne Horvitz has garnered praise for the way the ensemble with its unusual instrumentation has creatively rearranged music originally written for other instruments. Horvitz served as producer and added a few keyboard touches, lending his stamp of approval.

The Westerlies will perform in Cleveland at the Bop Stop. Classical Revolution, the Cleveland ensemble which aims to take classical music out of its normal confines, opens.

Tickets are $10.
