Great Lakes Light Opera is a new project trying to provide opportunities for classical trained musicians — including a number of them with Cleveland Institute of Music degrees — to do opera performances in non-traditional venues. It’s had some growing pains since its 2012 formation but has risen to sing another day.
Now it’s back to present a performance called Macabaret, which it describes as “a stylized revue where classically trained singers portray the disturbed patients of an insane asylum. Performers invite the audience to follow them on a descent into madness through a series of darkly comedic sketches, and performances of operatic scenes and popular musical numbers such as Sweeney Todd, Little Shop of Horrors, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
Sounds perfect for pre-Halloween, and they’re inviting the audience to wear costumes to the show at Castle GreatSkull in Asiatown Saturday evening. There will be dancing following the performance.
Tickets are $5 or $7 for a couple; food will be available for purchase.
The group will also be doing a short, cleaned-up version of the show, promised to be family-friendly, at the 5th Street Arcades from 11am-1pm on Fri 10/24. That’s free but donations are welcome.
