Eclectic, Unpredictable String Quintet Sybarite5 Performs at Cleveland Museum of Art

Fri 4/19 @ 7:30PM

Sybarite5 isn’t your traditional string ensemble, although they play traditional instruments: violin (2), viola, cello and double bass. It does play classical music, so to speak— much of it new music commissioned for the group — but it drenches it in a variety of other sounds, described in its bio as “an intoxicating cocktail of post-genre musical goodness.”

Its most recent album Collective Wisdom, released last October, is a mélange of material: premieres of commissioned works, improvised pieces, electronics, Armenian folk tunes and an arrangement of a tune by Americana/bluegrass ensemble the Punch Brothers.

Its concerts offer a similar unpredictable mix of pieces. (You can check out their setlists on their website, as if they were the Grateful Dead.) You MIGHT hear something by Mozart but you’re far more likely to hear a song by Radiohead — at least four are in their repertoire — arranged for strings.

The group performs at the Cleveland Museum of Art. (Their repertoire even includes a piece by Serbian-American composer Aleksandra Vrebalov who performed their last week.) Get tickets here.
