Fri 8/4 & Sat 8/5

Fri 8/11 & Sat 8/12

There’s a lot to do in Northeast Ohio in the summertime but one of our longstanding favorites is the Heinz Poll Summer Dance Festival, free and outdoors in Akron parks with outstanding local and national dance companies, and theater quality lighting and sound. Bring a chair or a blanket.

All performances begin at 8:45pm. Repertory is usually TBA but this year we have learned that Verb Ballets’ concert will include a new piece by Tommie-Waheed Evans, Surge. Capacity. Force. Read all about it soon at ClevelandConcertDance.com.

Featured company Urban Bush Women will perform Walking with ‘Trane, a multi-media treatment of the music and legacy of composer and saxophonist John Coltrane.

Each Friday and Saturday evening at 7:45 it’s the children’s interactive program. Taught by dancers from the University of Akron Dance Institute, children are allowed up on the stage to experience dance for themselves. “Even if it’s a rainy evening, we still have to do the children’s interactive. They come all dressed up and they cry if it’s cancelled,” says festival co-founder Jane Startzman.

Master classes are offered every Saturday during the festival from 11am-12:30pm at the University of Akron Center for Dance and Theater, Guzzetta Hall, Albrecht Studio. Class size limited to 30; class fee $10 due at the time of the class. For more information contact Jane Startzman, 330—990-5263, JaneStartzman@gmail.com.
