@OberlinCollege Alum Return to Finney Chapel With Imani Winds

Sun 2/9 @ 4PM

You can go home again — if you are a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory.

Two of the five members of Imani Winds — oboist Toyin Spellman-Diaz and bassoonist Monica Ellis — joined up with three graduates of other top conservatories such as the Manhattan School of Music to form the ensemble shortly after their graduation in the mid ’90s. They’ll be at Oberlin’s Finney Chapel for a concert, accompanied by the longtime collaborator pianist Gilbert Kalish.

The New York-based ensemble, which also includes clarinetist Mariam Allen, flutist Valerie Coleman and French horn player Jeff Scott doesn’t restrict itself to classical music. They’ve performed and recorded jazz, cabaret-style music, and music with Latin and African influences. They’ve commissioned new works as well.

They’ll be displaying many of the facets of what they do at their Oberlin concert. The program will include Igor Stravinsky’s groundbreaking The Rite of Spring, Astor Piazzolla’s classic Libertango, and even a piece composed by Coleman.

Tickets are $45 in advance, $48 at the door.
