It seemed like Pride in the CLE, the downtown festival organized by the LGBT Center of Cleveland to celebrate Pride Month, was bigger than ever in its tenth year. It spilled over from Mall C down to Mall B next to the convention center where celebrants in colorful, ruffled, sequined costumes gamboled on the grass between scoring food, visiting the seemingly endless booths from businesses, social service agencies, activist groups and government agencies, shopping the many vendors, and taking in the entertainment from speaker, comedians, drag artists, dancers, choruses, theatrical ensembles and musicians.
The parade seemed much longer than ever too, with numerous businesses and organizations we’ve never seen in it before. LGBT Center executive director Phyllis Seven brought a team from the NAACP onstage to announce their first year as a sponsor. While reports from around the country claim that many businesses pulled out of Pride celebrations this year for fear of blowback from the Trump administration, the opposite seemed true in Cleveland, as law firms, banks, retail businesses, churches and education groups marched with traditional LGBTQ+ organizations.
