It’s all becoming clear. Our future is with startups. Nothing against the Fortune 500, but those behemoths aren’t coming back. And instead of waiting, the region’s creative class has been getting busy. Start with our interview with startup Pixel Thought Foundry, who located their new LLC more for the buzz than the prestigious address.

From there, zoom in for a closer look at the new Nexus Cafe & Coffeehouse on Prospect, reinvesting all their profits into their non-profit arm, I Love Cleveland. Talk about focus! And you really should do yourself a favor and watch our 2006 interview with Jimmy Dimora at the height of his hubris and arrogance. You’ll realize how far we’ve come.

We remember Ace Dixon, keep up with director Tyler Davidson, and prove how the Harvard Business Review is dead wrong. We also give away more money, this week to Jessica Skolmowski for using our mobile app. Maybe you’re next? All while offering you more cool events in the coming week than you could do in a month. I hope that’s clear enough for ya. –Thomas Mulready

When partners Will Kesling and John Knapp went looking for a place to set down roots, they chose the heart of Lakewood, both for the buzz on the street and for the inviting atmosphere for entrepreneurs. Plus they needed a place that would welcome their irreverent style and non-stop antics, as seen in this video.

Their design & development company Pixel Thought Foundry is going strong, and Will is becoming part of the emerging comedy scene locally… Watch the video here.

Loving Cleveland, Changing Lives
Nexus Cafe & Coffeehouse

It began as a simple review of a new cafe in downtown Cleveland.

But it became far more complicated once I started to peel back the layers of the onion that is Nexus Cafe and Coffeehouse…

On July 31, 2012, Former Cuyahoga County Commissioner Jimmy Dimora was sentenced to 28 years in prison after he was convicted of a pervasive pattern of corruption, including racketeering, bribery and 31 other charges.

On October 19, 2006, Cool Cleveland’s Thomas Mulready interviewed Jimmy Dimora, who was then one of three sitting Commissioners and Chairman of the Cuyahoga County Democratic party.

This segment deals with the impending election:, Dimora was up for re-election himself. And the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections was drawing national attention for incompetence:

Cool Cleveland: Don’t you have some leadership or control here as a County Commissioner over this Board of Elections to get something done?

Jimmy Dimora: We do have some leverage, with the funding, but we don’t oversee or vote on the purchase of the machines or the actual election process, that’s left up to the director, the deputy director, the staff and personnel…

Cool Cleveland: Right, but are you not urging that board to call for (director) Michael Vu’s resignation?

Jimmy Dimora: I think it’s been given already that Michael Vu, after this election, will be gone from the Board of Elections…

Death of the Business Decathlete
Why the Harvard Business Review is Dead Wrong

With the 2012 Olympics showcasing the laser-like focus of elite athletes, a recent Harvard Business Review champions the Renaissance Man, the Jack of All Trades, as the savior.

But Cool Cleveland’s own Soundbite Laureate Douglas O’Bryon refutes this view, and claims that Resistance is Feudal. If you want to get hired, you’ll have to think inside the box. Take a deep breath Cleveland, and read on…

Everyone that met musician Greg Kudlaty, from all phases of his life in the Cleveland area, have stories of their adventures with “Ace” Dixon, as he was known, or tales passed on from earlier escapades. And there were escapades…

“The Most Dangerous Man From Parma, Ohio” has friends going back decades in the music business.

He passed away on 7/24/12 after a series of heart attacks.

OK, so I began my boycott of the Browns back in 1970 when they traded Ohio native and Ohio State standout Paul Warfield to the Miami Dolphins (for a draft pick which was used on Purdue University quarterback Mike Phipps, remember him?)…

Tyler Davidson: Take 5 (Part 3)
Comedy, Cleveland & Compliance

Tyler Davidson is back in Cleveland. Technically, he never left.

N.E. Ohio is home base for him. His last film, the controversial Compliance, took him to New York for production and back to Sundance for a heated post-screening debate. This summer, two years since shooting Take Shelter here, with Cleveland-based co-producer Bob Ruggeri, he’s producing his next cinematic project, Toy’s House

Corporates Steal From Cleveland Schools… “it should be up to the State of Ohio to pay the overdue bills of the Cleveland School system.” I’m not sure how that would fit into the state’s (notoriously complex) foundation formula. As it is, Cleveland Schools spend a bit over $15,000 per pupil. That makes Cleveland schools the 15th biggest spender out of the state’s 610 districts…
