Growing

We leave behind a challenging year and begin anew, focusing on ways to improve our community. This is how we grow.

Friends of Cleveland Kennel are now offering low-cost services and free exams to financially challenged pet owners. Tim Smith’s Community Greenhouse Partners celebrates almost 10 years of organic, sustainable urban farming with his legendary Hair of the Dog omelet benefit party.

An essential element of growth is moving on. Our celebration An Evening With(out) David Bowie expands on last year’s sold-out shows, with just about everyone planning to attend both Parts 1 and 2. Excellent seats at the BOP STOP are still available. Our fashion maven Dru Christine lays out some of the coolest trends for this time of year. And Infinite Twelve makes good on a promise.

This week, we’re discussing the CAC individual artist grants at the Happy Dog, lighting candles at the Maltz, listening to KSU alum Dorian Wallace at BLU Jazz+, viewing Dr. Strange at the GLSC, and celebrating NYE at First Night in Akron. Your list of options just grew. –Thomas Mulready

Almost ten years ago, Tim Smith had a vision: an organic, sustainable urban farm that provided locals with a supply of healthy food grown in their backyard while spreading the gospel about the model and teaching others how to do it.

The vision became Community Greenhouse Partners, which has taken root and survived, despite numerous challenges. On New Year’s Day, Smith is reviving the legendary Hair of the Dog omelet parties he used to do at his home, this time at the farm as a benefit for CGP. Smith tells John Benson about CGP’s growing pains and accomplishments. Sun 1/1.

There’s little more heart-wrenching than having to give up a beloved pet because hard knocks have made pet food and vet care unaffordable. That’s what the Neighborhood Pets Outreach & Resource Center, founded by Friends of the Cleveland Kennel, aims to prevent.

Opened this past fall, the Slavic Village-based center offers financially challenged pet owners super low-cost services and free exams, and hosts free spay-neuter days. It hopes to expand to other neighborhoods as well. John Benson talks to FOCK’s Becca Britton about this new way the group is helping Cleveland’s pets.

Celebrating his birth and death dates, this acclaimed presentation on David Bowie’s life and music, featuring rare video, needle drops, archival photos and insider secrets by CoolCleveland’s Thomas Mulready on Fri 1/13/17 and Sat 1/14/17 at the BOP STOP, now in two sessions, presented back-to-back each evening. Tickets are selling briskly. Join us for An Evening With(out) David Bowie.

Part 1 begins with his half-dozen failed attempts at stardom in the 1960’s to worldwide “Fame” with Young Americans, during which Bowie bottoms out, as the excesses of mid-1970’s stardom threaten to engulf him. Part 2 covers his Mid- to Late-Period, from “The Berlin Trilogy” through Let’s Dance to his mysteriously choreographed death and his final recordings. Tickets are now on sale. Last year’s shows sold out four times.

In her latest illustrated piece, she lays out some of the coolest trends to help you avoid looking drab and predictable at a time of year when we all need a burst of glamour to lift our spirits.

The overall theme of Infinite Twelve’s new eponymous EP examines the complexities of love, loss and redemption. Vocalist Guy-Vincent explains, “The songs featured on this EP were written during a time in my life where I experienced the loss of loved ones. For me, this project became symbolic of my latest series of art, making it a natural evolution to express musically with Brian Hager.”

In case you’re thinking Infinite Twelve is a way for Hager and Guy-Vincent to make good on a promise made decades ago, you wouldn’t be wrong. “That’s totally what it is,” Hager said. “We’re filling something that was unfilled.” John Benson tells us all about it.

No, I’m not referring to some jackbooted, neo-fascist thugs, bent upon dragging people out of their homes and forcing them to sign some sort of loyalty pledge that binds them to the soon-to-be president. No, the folks we need to get ready for are those bozos who – because of who allegedly won the presidency – think they too can win elective office…

* Making Bricks Without Straw We no longer are casting about for programs that work; we know which ones do. It’s a matter of making violence reduction a priority in the city and county. We can do this.
