The City Club returns to Public Square for its series of free lunchtime forums focusing on downtown Cleveland as a neighborhood. The topic this week is “From Riverbank to Core to Shore: The Promise of Downtown Cleveland Connectivity.”
While we’ve always heard a lot about how our waterfront — river and lake — are among the city’s greatest assets, we haven’t historically acted on that until recently. On the lake front, we lag Chicago which has protected most of its lakefront for recreation (although we’re a bit ahead if it as far as cleaning up our river). The discussion today will revolve around the various plans being bandied about for developing waterfront areas both for recreation and for “mixed-use” properties.
“As downtown continues to grow, ensuring residents and visitors feel connected to the area is essential,” says the City Club. “Join us in Public Square as we hear how reliable public transit, bike and pedestrian lanes, public green spaces and basic amenities can come together to create an integrated neighborhood that is inclusive and welcoming to all.” We’ll see about that last part or whether tourism and “luxury” development take precedence.
Panelists include Keshia Chambers from the Mayor’s Office of Capital Projects; Alex Harnocz of Destination Cleveland; Deb Janik of Detroit-based Bedrock, which is proposing to develop 35 riverfront acres; and downtown councilman Kerry McCormack.
The forum is free and open to all, but if you can’t make it down, you can watch the livestream on the City Club’s website. In case of rain, the forum moves into Old Stone Church on the north side of Public Square. Questions can be tweeted to @TheCity Club or texted to 330-541-5794.
