Play Explores Relationship Between Gay Son, His Husband and His Religious Mom

Fri 8/15-Sun 8/31

Playwright Harrison David Rivers has written nearly 20 plays, which have been performed all across the country. His play we are continuous had its premiere at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2022, and has been performed in Dallas, San Diego, San Francisco and Rochester — and this August, in Cleveland when convergence-continuum theatre in Tremont will present its Ohio premiere.

The play draws on Rivers’ identity as a queer Black man, exploring the relationship between a mother, son and her son’s husband. In it, we’re told, Simon and his devout Christian mother, Ora, have always been close. Despite knowing Simon is gay, Ora has avoided discussing his sexuality since he came out at sixteen. Through richly drawn characters and evocative storytelling, Rivers crafts a narrative that resonates with universal themes of human connection and the ever-evolving nature of family.:

The play, co-directed by Jeannine Gaskin and Lauren Lash, features actors Sherri Tolliver, Michael Montanus and Noah Christoper. It opens Friday August 15 and runs Thursday-Saturday @ 7:30pm and Sundat@3pm through August 31 at convergence-continuum’s home, the Liminis.
