Fri 8/15 @ 7:30PM
Although she’s just 2o, Cleveland jazz fans should be really familiar with vocalist Ava Preston, who has been preforming in local clubs since before she was a teenager. She was part of Tri-C’s noted high school Jazz All-Stars program, and has shown off her vocal and composing chops (she writes classic tunes that sound like they could be ripped from the Great American Songbook) at Tri-C JazzFest and many other venues.
She’s now spread her wings and fled the Cleveland coop on her way to a likely international career. She’s currently a student at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York, the same college that launched Cleveland trumpet player Dominick Farinacci on HIS international jazz career.
But before she goes back for the next semester, she’ll be treating local fans to one last performance of the summer, at Market Garden Brewery’s Irishtown Bend Taproom. She’s bringing a friend too: fellow Julliard student, pianist/composer José André, another rising star. He’s from Bolivia, where, like Ava, he began showing his musical talent at an early age. Back when the value of immigrants was still recognized by the U.S. government, the Kennedy Center (back when it was still a respected cultural institution) sponsored his family’s move to Washington, D.C. where they now live. His music brings the sounds of various Latin cultures into a jazz context.
They’ll be supported by bassist Taylor Arborgast and drummer Gabe Jones.
