Benjamin Franklin Gardens in Old Brooklyn is the largest community garden in the city, offering growing spaces to students, master gardeners and community members. It’s also a great space in which to enjoy nature — and music.

The garden has a gazebo where it presents concerts biweekly on Saturday nights in the summer. But on July 4th weekend, a teetering tree branch made that space unsafe for visitors, and for the scheduled concert with Cleveland’s Alla Boara. Instead it set the band up at the end of a road leading to the community garden spaces, and visitors set their chairs up along that road for a beautiful evening of music with some of the area’s top musicians playing music unique in this area — and perhaps in the whole country. It’s based on Italian folk music, some of it vanishing, to which they apply their own spin, fueled by their jazz backgrounds. Much of it is lively and invites crowd participation, and the all-ages audience eagerly contributed when asked.
