You can’t miss it: the awards season is here. But don’t fool yourself: most Hollywood films don’t help our region’s economy. In fact, NYC & LA often tempt our young talent away. However, locally-produced, independent films can be a boon, and this week we talk with our own Film Commission and recent transplants Nehst Studios. Plus, a roundup of cool upcoming music, 10 good reasons to get excited about CSU basketball, and Mansfield, well, he’s not backing down. All of which would actually make a good film. –Thomas Mulready

Winters Warm, although employing a completely false name in regard to their hometown, bring you completely truthful songs as a soundtrack to their lives. A three-piece hailing from Cleveland, Winters Warm is making a name for themselves, as heard on their debut EP, Crooked Road. This indie pop EP will be released on Thu 2/3 at the Happy Dog – attendees receive it for free.

Songs of uncertainty, betrayal and love fill the four song EP with more heavy than light. Musically, it is a mellow listen with smooth transitions and distinct guitar riffs. Each song holds a different sound, ranging from a White Stripes comparison with abrupt stair-like transitions in “First Song” to the drum-reliant “Crooked Road.”

The vocals are relaxed and at times nearly monotonous. For a significant portion of the music, these are the vocals that fit the songs and bring everything together, but there are still times when vocal variation could bring more life to the songs. Lyrically the words flow well, conveying melancholy and frustration… Read more from Laurie Wanninger here

While I’m pleased to see those who agree with Phillip Morris and his twisted takes on African-Americans rise to his defense when I labeled him an Uncle Tom… their logic is a bit loopy: They castigated me for criticizing his opinions… by criticizing my opinions. The upside of this is… they’re giving me another opportunity to call Morris out.

Fair is fair: Of course Morris has a right to his opinions (as Tom-ish, twisted and derogatory as they might be) just as much as I have a right to mine: And my opinion is… Phillip Morris is an unreconstructed Uncle Tom… Read more from Mansfield Frazier here

While Super Bowl XLV will soon be remembered as just another Roman numeral in a long tradition of season-ending football games, within social media circles, the upcoming 2011 classic will forever be remembered as “Social Bowl I.” In the 12 months since the last Super Bowl, social media within corporations has transitioned from “bleeding edge” to “leading edge” in terms of marketing, advertising, brand messaging, and target audience communication. Progressive and emboldened social media advocates are anxious to make their mark and show the world that they can finally compete with the big boys in the big leagues on the biggest stage and on the biggest media day of the year.

To help you keep score of this “passing of the baton” during the big game, I have enclosed your own Social Bowl Bingo card below, allowing you to play along with your rowdy friends. Read more from Soundbite Laureate Douglas O’Bryon here.
