Back in 2011, Tim Smith conceived of the urban farming project Community Greenhouse Partners. It ran for ten years before running out of steam and lying fallow for a couple of years. Then last year, the CGP board donated the facility to the nonprofit Food Strong, which has revived the space as Superior Farm and is moving it forward with a ribbon-cutting for its first season this week on Friday May 30. It marks an exciting revival for the property and a big step forward for Food Strong, founded in 2016 by Sara Continenza to build a more just, accessible and health food system via a network of programs that engage the entire community.
The Food Strong Team has big plans for the three-acre farm, a closed church property that CGP acquired from the Cleveland Catholic Diocese. It includes the church itself, as well as a parish house and the surrounding property. It will first begin food production and distribution there, on a larger scale than it’s been able to do at its current space across from Coit Road Farmers Market. Its five-year plan involves turning the space into a multi-organization community hub and education center.
The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 10:30am at the restored hoop house, and the first seeds will be planted. During the event, attendees can take tours of the site, take part in Q&A sessions and provide their own feedback.
