Sun 2/8 @ 3PM
Heights Arts’ Close Encounters concert series take place in intimate venues (including sometimes private homes) giving music lovers the opportunity to get really “up close and personal” with small ensembles of musicians.
The next concert, however, will take place at Dunham Tavern, and it will feature a new chamber music group, a foursome called the Taplin Quarter. It features Katherine Bormann and Zhan Sho on violins, Gareth Zehngut on viola and Martha Baldwin on cello, all members of the Cleveland Orchestra (as is Dane Johansen who is the curator of the series and often draws on his orchestra mates to perform).
The Taplin Quartet’s program is called From East to West and will feature an intriguing array of different music, ranging from pieces you likely know — “Waltzing Matilda” (often called the “Australian national anthem” and “Clair de Lune” — to “Gobi Gloria” by contemporary Chinese composer Lei Lang inspired by Mongolian music in the first half. After intermission they’ll play Claude Debissy’s String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10, and wrap up with an arrangement of a traditional Chinese song. It’s quite a journey!
