It’s not out yet, but it’s in the pipeline and we’ll let you know when it hits. It’s the first recording by a new group of veteran Akron musicians. The all-instrumental Golems of the Red Planet features Harvey Gold on guitar and keyboards, Mark Allender on bass, Bob Ethington on drums and Matt Reese on cello. Their bios include stints in bands such as Tin Huey, the HiFis, Unit 5, Flying Carpet People and many, many more. Ther upcoming album is titled Surf Masada: The Compositions of John Zorn, which they say “takes selections from John Zorn’s Masada and sends them crashing through the reverb tank of a surf band.” You can expect it in June when they’ll play a release show at the Beachland.
Want a sneak preview? Head down to Jilly’s Music Room this Friday where they’ll take the stage, along with “intergalactic surf and turf” trio Jupiter 3.
“This is very much not a normal band — and has no intention of becoming one,” the Golems warn.
