Are you ready to sit in the theater for nearly four hours to be hammered by one of Eugene O’Neill’s most intense plays (and most of his plays are intense) revolving around the Tyrone family’s “deepest wounds, addiction, resentment, longing, and a love that refuses to disappear.” That’s A Long Day’s Journey Into Night, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1957.
Sound like fun? Hey, I did it at Northwestern University many years ago — in an evening that also featured Samuel Beckett’s ponderously repetitive Waiting for Godot. AND I took the El up to Evanson for this evening immediately after having all my wisdom teeth removed under anesthesia. What a memorable night! So you can survive it!
But if you’re in the right mindset, the play can leave you with countless things to ponder about the roots of family dysfunction. When Ensemble Theatre performs the play at its home at Marinello Little Theatre on the John Carroll University campus, the production will be helmed by Ian Wolfgang Hinz and Rebecca Moseley and performed by five seasoned veterans of local stage.
