Back in 2014, the Space: Rock Gallery in the Waterloo Arts District did a show called Pat’s in the Flats Roadhouse Chic: Rock and Rolling Rock at the Bottom of the Hill. It was a tribute to the funky little factory workers’ bar just down Literary Hill from Tremont that gradually morphed into an underground rock & roll venue at night. It featured both local and touring underground bands who were too small-time to demand professional stage and lights. The White Stripes played there before they hit the big time. It was owned by Pat Hanych, who inherited the bar from her father, from 1969 until 2018, and she always welcomed any band who wanted to play and promote a show there, no matter how offbeat and off-the-grid they were.

Hanych passed away in 2022 and isn’t around to see a new iteration of the show, put together by local artist Shawn Mishak, which opens at Doubting Thomas Gallery this week during Walkabout Tremont. It will feature some of the same photos, flyers and other memorabilia, plus lots of additional material, including video, provided by Mishak, Jay Brown, Lou Muenz, Anastasia Pantsios and the late Malcolm Ryder, whose bands were frequent occupants of the tiny Pat’s stage.
