The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced the nominees for their induction class for 2021. It’s a musical, racial, cultural and gender -diverse list sure to fuel many online discussions and arguments, and a lot of “At last!” as well as the usual, “Ewwww, that person doesn’t belong there!”
It includes a lot of first-time nominees and excludes some previous nominees who surely deserved induction. And of course, there are the usual omissions of artists who deserved induction long ago. Patsy Cline (Kraftwerk, MC5…), anyone?
The 2021 Nominee list includes Mary J. Blige, Kate Bush, Akron’s Devo (certainly one of the more deserving choices), Foo Fighters, the Go-Gos, Iron Maiden, Jay-Z, Chaka Khan, Carole King, Feta Kuli, LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Todd Rundgren, Tina Turner and Dionne Warwick.
The inclusion of seven women should help mollify those who point out the Rock Hall’s gender imbalance, something driven less by oversights in the Rock Hall’s nomination/induction process than the historical and persistent gender imbalance in the music industry.
As usual, the Rock Hall is reaching out to engage fans with its official “fan vote” contest, where you can vote for your five favorites each day through April 30. The fan vote is equivalent to one actual ballot. To vote, go to vote.rockhall.com.
The 2021 class will be announced in May, and the induction ceremony will take place in Cleveland in the fall. That’s a change from the former spring inductions, driven by the events of last year, when the ceremony was moved from spring to fall due to the pandemic, and eventually took place in November as an HBO special with no live event.
