Learn More About the Impact of Cash Bail & the Drive to Eliminate It at Virtual Forum

Tue 9/7 @ 6PM

The elimination of cash bail has been growing as a hot topic around the country. Progressive states like Illinois have already abolished it.

The system of requiring people accused of a crime to purchase their way out of jail while awaiting trial falls heavily on those who can least afford it: those without financial resources who often have families and friends lacking in financial resources as well. And while jailed without being convicted, many lose jobs, homes and families. It’s not, as some have scare-mongered, a “get out of jail free” card: those whose records or crimes indicate they are a danger to the community or to anyone in it are not eligible.

The Social Justice Institute and ACLU of Ohio are offering a virtual conversation on cash bail in Ohio and will clear up some of these myths.  The event will look at the devastating impacts of cash bail and mass incarceration and the fiscal impact of caging Ohioans pretrial, and give an overview of bipartisan bail reform bills Senate Bill 182 and House Bill 315. It will also share with participants how they can help with testimony writing training and mobilization opportunities.
