The Marian Anderson String Quartet features four women with degrees from such prestigious conservatories as the Manhattan School of Music and Juilliard. In 1991, two years after forming, they won the Cleveland International String Quartet Competition as the Chaminade Quartet, the first African-American ensemble to ever win a classical music competition. To mark the occasion, they asked legendary contralto Marian Anderson for permission to use her name and received it, carrying it beyond her death in 1993. They have made it their mission to perform at non-traditional venues as well as concert halls and have served residencies at universities in New York, California and Texas.
The group will be doing a lecture/concert based on Songs of Freedom and the Underground Railroad. It takes place at the Fairmount Presbyterian Church in Cleveland Heights. It’s free.
