Albany, NY-based singer/pianist Christine Spero is an accomplished songwriter in her own right. She was a finalist in the USA Songwriting competition and has released two jazz-inflected pop albums of her own songs.
But last year, she released a CD called Spero Plays Nyro, a tribute to one of her primary influences — one of the most celebrated late 20th-century songwriters and 2012 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Laura Nyro. On it she offers her own take on some of Nyro’s classic, oft-covered songs such as “Stoned Soul Picnic,” “And When I Die,” and “Sweet Blindness,” whose suggestive open-endedness gives performer room to add their own contributions.
Spero will perform Nyro’s music at Nighttown, with Elliot Spero on percussion and sax. Tickets are $20.
