Les Delices Transforms Torch Songs with 17th/20th-Century Contrasts

Fri 3/6 @ 7:30PM

Sat 3/7 @ 7:30PM

Sun 3/8 @ 4PM

Les Delices artist director/oboist Debra Nagy and soprano Hélène Brunet, along with harpischordist Eric Milnes and Mélisande Corriveau, viola da gamba & pardessus de viole player, from Quebec’s L’Harmonie des Saisons, are bringing a program called “Torchsongs Transformed” to three area venues.

It’s grounded in Les Delices’ speciality, baroque music, to which it adds 20th century jazz and pop with tunes associated with vocalists such as Billie Holiday, Edith Piaf and Nina Simone. The baroque tunes will be played back-to-back with the 20th-century tunes, divided into sections by seasons. So, for instance, the 17th-century tune “Allez bergers” by Joseph Chabanceau de la Barre is followed by Gershwin’s “Summertime.”

They’ll perform at Akron’s Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, Lakewood Congregational Church on Saturday and Plymouth Church UCC on Sunday. Tickets are $25-$40, $5 for students.
