Artists Explore Darkness at Understory Gallery

Wed 7/15 @ 5-8PM

Understory Gallery at 78th Street Studios (WAY back of the RAMP level — worth making the trip) specializes in small group shows with interesting themes.

Its new show, opening this week is called Darkness, and they say that it celebrates darkness “as a site of revelation and repair.” The six artists whose work will be on view explore what could happen when we pay attention to darkness without fear. “Darkness probes the moist inner workings of the places we are often most unwilling to go: our bodies, our racial identities, and even the ground under our feet,” says the show’s press release. The artists Jackie Carpenter, Marian Lyndgaard, Renée Jett, Cassie Jeffries, Tristen Kovacs and Bonnie O App venture into that exploration in quilting, mending, collage, cyanotype, painting and digital animation, asking what we try to keep concealed and the benefits of bringing it to light.

The show will open with a preview on Wednesday July 15 @ 5-8pm so you can peruse it and meet the artists without the craziness of Third Friday. If you like the craziness of Third Friday it’ll still be there on Friday July 17 @ 5-9pm, and on view through August 22.
